Xanax (alprazolam) is a drug used in the treatment of anxiety disorders and panic disorders. It belongs in the group benzodiazepine drugs, which are all analgesic drugs used for anxiety disorders and similar disease. It treats the unbalance chemicals in our brain that can cause anxiety disorder. It has analgesic, hypnotic, skeletal muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant properties.
Anxiety disorders or panic attacks are caused by low levels of GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) in our brain. GABA is the major neurotransmitter of the brain; xanax enhances the activity of GABA chemicals in our brain. It is considered to be an effective drug for the treatment of panic attacks, generalized anxiety order and social anxiety disorder. It is usually prescribed to patients with anxiety disorder caused by severe depression. It is a fast acting drug and it can achieve its result in just 1 or 2 hours after consumption. For the successful treatment of panic disorders, it is usually consumed more than 4 mg per day. However it also has limit of 10 mg per day. It is not known, what is the exact treatment period of panic disorder with xanax. However prolong use of the drug can make the patient tolerant and dependant on the drug. It can also cause side effects, such as weight gain, agitation, increase sweating, yellowing of skin or eyes, irritability, sexual dysfunction, mood changes, muscle weakness, headache or memory loss.
For elderly people or children younger than 18, only 0.25mg dose should be provided two or three times a day. This may be gradually increased if required and tolerated.
